Stage 7, June 17

We left Besancon after breakfast and Morning Prayer, heading into the hills. Every morning, one of us offers a reflection. Giancarlo talked about the role of suffering, knowing that we have a lot of climbing ahead of us.

We followed a beautiful river for miles before making an ascent of six miles. This area of southern France is spectacular.

One of the Psalms this morning praised God for mountains and hills. The Lord was certainly praised as we climbed for six miles without a break. Even though we are climbing as many feet as yesterday, the grades are not as severe.

After reflecting on Giancarlo's words, we finally reached Pontarlier, where we enjoyed a final lunch in France.

Janet, Lynn, and Maggie demonstrate how to eat outside an affordable cafe.

We cross into Switzerland and arrive at the retreat house where we are staying in Vallorbe. The rooms are small, there is a huge crowd of German kids, but we have a place for Mass, dinner, and sleep. The kids are juniors in high school. They're on their end-of-the-year field trip, and they are very well behaved. We had a nice talk with their leader.

Real pilgrims do their own laundry by hand and hang it up to dry.
