Rest day, June 19

This is truly a blessed place. It was wonderful to sleep late and not rush around preparing to ride many miles.

The view outside the Hospice is stunning. It was at this spot that we had up picture taken three years ago before our descent and journey to Rome. After breakfast and Morning Prayer, Donald, Lynn, Maggie, Giancarlo, Janet and I decided to take a hike.

We began at the sign directing us to the walking route for the Via Francigena and headed back down the mountain in the direction we had ridden up yesterday.

In spite of a prediction of bad weather, the day was beautiful as we made our way through the snow.

Giancarlo, Maggie, and I pause to admire the view. It is refreshing to walk around for a change.

The community has established huts for travelers during the winter, in case they get into trouble. The image of Saint Bernard can be seen on the side.

Each hut is fully equipped with supplies, including an emergency phone, which would not have been around in the days of Saint Bernard.

Because Janet is not accustomed to this altitude, Donald (aka Saint Christopher) carried her up part of the way back to the Hospice.

We celebrated Mass in the crypt chapel, had lunch, and welcomed my brother, Tony, with Bill,  Marielle, and Evonne Corbett .

The entire group is together briefly, before Donald, Lynn, Maggie, and Susan depart for the airport in Milan. We spend time together, shared our first meal with the reconstituted new group, pray Evening Prayer, and go to bed early.
